As a one-off special event to kick-off the national tour, Dinefwr Green Group are hosting a special event that will preview some of the forthcoming work of the Free Range Network on energy futures. Traditionally people have asked the government to solve problems, and in response the government exhorts people to make "better choices" in the way they live their lives. The question we ask in this evening workshop is, is this the mainstream, incremental, status quo solution to energy depletion and climate change compatible with the scale of the problems that face us today? Over the evening we will examine the energy, food and resources consumed by the UK, and examine whether the solutions proposed to date cut the energy and carbon "density" of today's level of consumption to the levels required to stabilise climate change and reduce our use of non-renewable resources. We will also look at to what extent we need to move beyond the mainstream solutions, to look at more radical approaches to managing consumption, in order to deliver long-term, sustainable levels of consumption. In the final analysis, we will examine whether it is governments, or the people, who must deliver these changes and whether these changes can be achieved "within the system" or whether concerned individuals need to step "outside" to find their own solutions.
