New Sheet E11. Fracking and Coalbed Methane

When gas fracking and other "unconventional" energy resources are discussed in the media the focus is usually on the technology used to produced the energy, or the impact this might have on the environment. In fact, the significant feature of the exploitation of unconventional energy resources is that our present energy situation has become so precarious that companies and government consider these valid energy sources!

At the end of last year we came across a rather strange "silly season" story in The Guardian. Here's what followed. This post raises an important debate within environmentalism and how it address the issue of 'ecological catastrophe'; what's more important, fitting into the media debate or speaking truth to power?

About the News and Alerts Network

The Free Range Network has, since it began in the mid-90s, put a lot of effort into information sharing. The news network is an extension of that – a digest of "the best bits" that we put together and circulate as an irregular (both chronoogically and thematically) bulletin. Our interests are anything that might be of interest to environmental, social and technological grassroots activists; that might be news reports, but we also send regular commentaries and links to news and current events that often fail to make the mainstream media.

As well as general news, the news network will also carry updates from the Free Range Network itself – announcements about new publications, events and training workshops, etc. We're also interested in your news if it's valuable and unique to a wide audience! If you have anything that you might think is appropriate for our list then send it (marked "For FRNAN" in the subject line) to the Free Range Network's main email address – info☮fraw.org.uk.

The FRNAN email list

In parallel to this section of the FRAW site we're running an "announce-only" email list (that is, it's not a discussion list, and will only carry news network posts) to send alerts direct via email. At most this will be only two or three posts per week, but in all likelihood less. Note also that our emails are, by default, digitally signed. If you want to verify that we really sent our news article/alert you can download the FRNAN public PGP key here.

If you'd like to be added to the email list and receive the bulletins via email then send your email address to frnan☮fraw.org.uk and ask to be put on the list. We don't need a name, affiliation or any other details (we're not bothered who we send information to) – we just need an email address to add to our distribution list. The list will only be used for the news and alerts posts and no other purpose, and it will not be passed to anyone else. If you should ever want to leave the list just send another email asking to be removed.
