|Summary text/ abstract||n New Year's Day 1994, in the early hours of dawn, over two thousand members of the Zapatista National Liberation Front (EZLN) emerged from the Lacandona jungle in Southeast Mexico and put Chiapas on the human rights map by declaring war on the Mexican government. What made this uprising different from previous attempts at revolution, however, was that in addition to guns and ammunition, the Zapatista Revolutionary Army also initiated a digital campaign that was to grow into a global information war. In this essay, the factors involved in the creation of the global Zapatista movement will be discussed, as well as the cultural, social and political issues involved in the creation of this information war. Using both contemporary and historical data, I will show how the EZLN is the latest in a long series of efforts at indigenous political organization and resistance against oppression at the hands of the Mexican state as well as multinational corporations. Furthermore, I will argue that the Zapatista netwar grew out of inter-village communications networks, growing political awareness, and the building of close relationships with sympathetic Mexican and foreign human rights.|
