About FRAW

What is the
Free Range Activism Website?

The Free Range Activism Website – FRAW – developed from the activity of the Free Range Network. Begun in 1996, it originally provided legal and technical information for grassroots activists. As governments and local authorities began to produce this information themselves the mission changed. So in 2001 the emphasis of the site changed from purely information provision to supporting the projects of the Free Range Network.

One key feature of the FRAW site is that it tries to make all information available under free documentation licenses. Unlike most other web sites, even the sites of leading campaign groups, the information provided by FRAW is freely available to print, distribute, modify and re-distribute. The only case where this is not permitted is where the Free Range Network do not hold the copyright of the material, and the rights owner will not agree to make it available under an open license. For more information see the copyright page.

As well as making information available under free licenses, the FRAW site itself has been entirely developed using free software and the Gnu/Linux operating system. As part of the new mission of the FRAW site we are promoting Gnu/Linux as the only sensible means of running computers within civil society. Not just because it's a lot cheaper, but because properietary software is increasingly restrictive in terms of what it allows the user to do. Such restrictions are meaningless in the realm of free and open source software.

The only problem with using free software to develop the site is that the pages may not display exactly as intended, particularly on Windoze machines.
