electrohippie tools for online communities

The purpose behind the formation of the electrohippie collective was to probe the potential for moving public action into the virtual space provided by the Internet. The practical output from this are the electrohippies tools.

Currently we are revising the design of some of our older tools and producing new documentation for them. We anticipate that the new material will be available in early 2007.

The Browser Freedom Alert Tool

The Browser Freedom tool is a script that polls the identity of the browser being used to view a page and alerts the user if a certain ID string is found. If you wish to implement this tool within your own web site you need to download the instructions page and the two JavaScript files listed below (note that the JavaScript files have a .txt extension to allow online viewing). You can also download the example HTML page for tips on implementation (which also has a .txt extension to allow online viewing).

  • The Browser Alert manual page. This provides information on how to customise the tool for your own web pages.

  • The Browser Alert page header code. This code can be inserted into the <HEAD> part of a web page or linked to a file as part of the <SCRIPT> tag.

  • The Browser Alert page body code. This code must be inserted into the <BODY> section of the page to automatically call the pollid() function (alternately, the function can be called from a link voluntarily by the user).

  • The Browser Alert example page. This contains the tags for a web page to demonstrate how the Browser Alert tool can be implemented online.

  • Download all the Browser Alert files as a single zip file.
