E.B.O
the free range 'energy beyond oil' project
Welcome to the web site of the Free Range 'Energy Beyond Oil' Project
The Free Range Energy Beyond Oil (EBO) Project is a collaboration between grassroots
campaigners who are working to highlight the importance of energy and consumption to the major
problems of our era: peak energy (the peak production of oil and gas over the next one or two
decades); climate change; and food security.
The project began in early 2002 with the simplest of questions how do wind turbines
fit into the whole energy equation in the UK. From there it developed into a series of
public workshops beginning in the Autumn of 2002, and by 2005 had stretched to generating a
book
(authored by the project's co-ordinator,
Paul Mobbs).
The scope of the project has also grown to encompass four themes or 'initiatives',
mirroring the presentations/workshops associated with the developing work of the
Project:
- Energy Beyond Oil
the original theme which looks at energy consumption, energy use, peak energy (the peaks of oil,
gas, coal and uranium) and renewable energy;
- Less is a Four Letter Word
evolving from the experience of the EBO workshops this theme looks at the conflicts,
on a finite planet, between moving towards a low energy lifestyle (e.g. energy
efficiency, waste reduction and we run our lives) and the mainstream imperative of
economic growth;
- Energy, Food and Agriculture
this is the theme to develop from 'less' theme of the project, and focusses on food
production, food security and the priority of security our food supply against the
problems of energy depletion and climate change (note, this theme doesn't officially
launch until the Autumn of 2008); and
- The Great Outdoors
this is a new theme developed to teach basic, practical skills for transition to a
lower energy pattern of living through learning how to camp or as it's
sometimes called, "the art of living in small spaces".
