The Free Range Community–Linux Training Centre Project

Old Phase-I System Documentation

As part of the development of the CLTC system the we documented the installation and configuration process, as well as developing information for use by those training on the system. We're maintaining this information online, even though the distributions/versions of Linux that were used are now out of date, because the information is broadly similar to the processes required to configure more recent Gnu/Linux distributions.

    Project Outline

  • Developing the Community-Linux Training Centre
A short history, and description of the aims and objectives of the project.

  • Designing the Community-Linux Training Centre
An outline of the issues relating to the development of the CLTC, and why we made various choices about the elements that make up the system. Those wishing to replicate the CLTC model may find this run through of the issues involved useful in designing the objectives, or limitations, of their own system.

    System Installation

  • Linux Installation and Hardware Issues
A discussion of the issues relating to installing Linux, and especially Linux on laptops. Also, how we undertook some experimentation to arrive at the best implementation for the CLTC system.
  • Basic Installation of the CLTC's Server System
The process of installing the CLTC server, step by step.

  • Installing the CLTC's Client Systems
The process of installing and configuring the client systems for use with the CLTC server.

    Networking Provision

  • Setting up DHCP, DNS and NFS on the CLTC Server A guide to installing the basic networking protocols that other aspects of the CLTC's operation rely upon. This is the first essential step after server installation, and should be carried out before implementing other network protocols.

    'Shared' Networking Protocols

  • Installing the Internet Chat and News Servers
Configuring the InterNet News (INN) Serverm and installation and configuration of the Internet Relay Chat (IRC) server. These two protocols are poorly supported in most sources of documentation as these server systems are not widely used by amateur users. This briefing outlines the process of installing both.

    Mail and List Services

  • Configuring the Sendmail Email Server and POP3 Access
This reviews the configuration of Sendmail to act as the CLTC's main Mail Transport Agent (MTA). It also looks at the installation of the Post Office Protocol, POP3, to allow the system clients access to email from the server.

    Remote Access

  • Configuring Remote Access
Information on configuring the basic remote access protocols: rlogin, rsh, rcp, telnet and ssh.

    Web Services

  • Configuring the CLTC Web Server
The configuration of the CLTC server, including the setting up of IP- and name-based virtual servers.

    Shared Network Services

  • Configuring the CLTC's Network Services
Outlines the process of installing the shared printer on the server, and configuring Samba to allow Windows clients to access the CLTC system.

    CLTC Information Sheets

  • The GNU/Linux Operating System Explained

  • Using the 'K' Desktop Environment – KDE

  • Remote Login to Another Linux System

  • Using Email

  • IRC: Internet Relay Chat

  • Using File Transfer Protocol (FTP) to Move Data
